Oregon has some of the wildest and most scenic forested areas in the nation. One such area between the Smith and Umpqua Rivers outside of Reedsport is called The Devil’s Staircase.
The Devil’s Staircase is an incredibly rugged area that is vital for the health of the surrounding ecosystem. It is home to many species, including the threatened Northern spotted owl and marbled murrelets. The streams in this area are vital spawning grounds for trout and salmon, making it important for the health of Oregon’s fisheries.
Furthermore, this area brings approximately $13 million in tourism to Oregon. It is quite important to protect this area as wilderness for the habitat that it provides and for its economic value.
I want to thank Rep. Peter DeFazio for recently bushwhacking the Devil’s Staircase and for his commitment to protect this area as wilderness. With his leadership and help from other elected officials from Oregon, we can permanently protect this gem.
