The No. 4 Oregon men’s golf team continued its strong play over the weekend, finishing tied for fourth place at Arizona State’s Thunderbird Invitational.
As a team, the Ducks ended the tournament at 6 under par with a score of 846. No. 3 Washington, No. 6 UCLA, and No. 14 USC were the only schools to finish ahead of Oregon. No. 2 Stanford and Arizona, meanwhile, matched the Ducks stroke for stroke for a fourth-place tie.
Eugene Wong, March’s Pacific-10 Conference Golfer of the Month, continued to light up the scorecard and finished tied for third place individually with a score of 207 (6 under par). The sophomore broke par in each of the three rounds, further backing up his No. 11 national ranking.
Fellow sophomore Daniel Miernicki also showed up to play, earning a tie for 11th place overall. Though he got off to a rather sluggish start with a 72 (1 over par) in each of the first two rounds, Miernicki blistered through the final round with a 66 (5 under par).
Rounding out Oregon’s top five players, junior Jack Dukeminier finished tied for 35th place, sophomore Andrew Vijarro tied for 61st, and redshirt sophomore Jack Paton tied for 70th.
In all, the fourth-place finish was impressive after the Ducks got off to a relatively slow start on Friday. Collectively, the team shot a 287 (3 over par) in the first round, and Wong was the only player to break par.
Things improved in the second round, as Oregon shot a 282 (2 under par), and the Ducks finished in style with a 277 (7 under par) in the final round.
