By my count, the University has 18 different intercollegiate athletics programs.
There is not a single African-American head coach among them.
Am I the only one who sees this as something that is terribly wrong?
My hope is that Oregon’s search committee for the new athletic director looks long and hard at qualified candidates of African-American descent.
Unfortunately, the commercial interests which dominate Oregon athletics likely want no part of such a thing. I say this with great confidence because it is no mere coincidence that Oregon is 0-18 where having an African-American head coach is concerned.
We need to consider giving meaning to the rhetoric of diversity.
Just do it.
