For a first year starter, Darron Thomas has done an admirable job protecting the ball. The sophomore quarterback has thrown only five interceptions through the team’s first six games, showing the pocket poise of a veteran.
Then again, Thomas has yet to face a free safety like Rahim Moore.
A junior at UCLA, Moore’s 14 career interceptions are tied for fourth most in school history. Last year, Moore exploded onto the scene with 10 picks (tops in the nation), and was named to scout.com’s first team All-America. This season, he has totaled just one interception (returned for 42 yards) and two pass breakups.
The 2010 numbers may seem paltry, but don’t let that fool you. Moore is a constant threat in coverage, and certainly the most talented safety Thomas has faced in his career. He should also be well prepared as the Bruins had the bye week to watch film of Oregon’s explosive offense.
Though the Ducks don’t rely upon it, they do tend to utilize the deep ball every once in a while to keep opponents on their toes. If and when that happens, look for Moore to be right in the middle of the action. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
