The men’s golf team hit a bump in the road on Wednesday during second round play at the NCAA Championships. After a strong showing to start the tournament on Tuesday, the Ducks hit a 294 (6-over par) in the second round and fell to a tie for ninth place.
With a total score of 578 (2-over par) heading into the third round today, Oregon will need to improve quickly in order to advance to match play. Only the top eight teams are selected to compete for a national championship over the final three days of the tournament.
Sophomore Eugene Wong managed to avoid the struggles many of his teammates faced, shooting an even-par 72 on Wednesday and finishing tied for 11th overall. Fellow sophomore Daniel Miernicki was not so lucky, capping the second round with an 80 (8-over par) and falling all the way to a tie for 101st place.
Sophomore Andrew Vijarro led the Ducks in the second round with a 71 (1-under par), while junior Isaiah Telles hit a 75 (3-over par) and fell to 55th overall.
No. 11 Florida State continues to surprise and holds a five-stroke lead overall going into third round play. The Seminoles shot a 279 (9-under par) on Wednesday, and their total score of 562 is 14-under par. No. 4 Oklahoma State follows in second place at 567 (9-under par), while No. 15 Georgia Tech jumped all the way to third place at 572 (4-under par).
Alex Ching of San Diego moved into the overall individual lead on Wednesday and leads a group of three by one stroke. Augusta State’s Henrik Norlander, who held a tie for the lead after the first round, fell to a tie for second. Today’s play will decide the individual national champion.
