On the Rocks, the University of Oregon’s award-winning men’s a cappella group, has made it to the semifinals of NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” a nationally televised a cappella competition.
Out of 10 original groups, On the Rocks is one of only five groups left after three nights of competition. The group took 16 current and former members to compete for the championship.
Each show features a new challenge for the groups to undertake. For the premiere, each group sang their “signature song.” On the Rocks, of course, chose to reprise their YouTube sensation “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga.
For the second show, On the Rocks performed “Live Your Life” by Rihanna and T.I. The challenge was to put an a cappella twist on a contemporary hit.
On the third night, On the Rocks performed Def Leppard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and Mr. Mister’s “Kyrie“ as part of a challenge to adapt rock hits and fun guilty pleasure songs.
The show, in its second season, features 10 a cappella groups from across the country performing in front of celebrity judges Ben Folds of the Ben Folds Five, Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men and Nicole Scherzinger of The Pussycat Dolls.
The winner will receive $100,000 and a Sony Music recording contract.
The first three shows aired on Dec. 6, 8 and 13. The next show will air on Dec. 15, and the live finale will air on Dec. 20 at 5 p.m. Pacific time.
