Just two days into the authorized ASUO Elections campaign window, several grievances have been officially filed to the Constitution Court and served to ASUO Elections Coordinator Will Price against the Ben & Katie (Ben Eckstein and Katie Taylor), Students United (Sinjin Carey and Kaitlyn Lange) and Students Untied!?!?! (Curtis Haley and Nick Warren) slates.
The ballot measures fall under four categories:
- Campaigning before the official election start date (first day of spring term)
- Student outreach techniques
- Endorsement from nonpartisan organizations
- Misrepresentation
Below are explanations of who has filed grievances and what they’re about, with links to the original grievance documents.
Filed by Ben Ordonez, campaign manager for Students United
- Against Students Untied slate — for having a name similar to the Students United slate that might confuse voters enough that they would vote for Students Untied instead of Students United and because Students Untied officially filed after Students United had declared its campaign
- Against Ben & Katie slate #1 — for having its campaign website running before the official campaign start date, which is the first day of spring term
- Against Ben & Katie slate #2 — for announcing his candidacy and asking for support at a Feb. 24 Alpha Phi Omega meeting and distributing this announcement over a University listserv, which is prohibited for campaign communication
- Against Ben & Katie slate #3 — for the Oregon Commentator having found Ben & Katie fliers in their March 28 publication because the action would have been taken before the official elections deadline
- Against Ben & Katie slate #4 — for purchasing the uostudentsunited.com domain name and redirecting it to the Ben & Katie campaign website and for operating the website before the official campaign start date
Filed by Ian Fielding, ASUO Senator and ACFC member
- Against Ben & Katie slate #5 — for OSPIRG’s participation and endorsement of the Ben & Katie slate because OSPIRG’s status as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization prevents the group from being an action organization that participates directly in political campaigns or that campaigns for particular candidates
Filed by Travis Prinslow, sophomore political science and philosophy major
- Against Ben & Katie slate #6 —for beginning to campaign on its website before the official campaign start date and for soliciting student support through several text messages the day before elections campaigning could begin
