Oregon committed a season-high 31 turnovers and shot 38.9 percent from the field (21-54) as No. 9 UCLA stormed out front early to an easy win, 87-57, Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The Ducks (11-6, 2-4 Pacific-10 Conference) made just seven of 25 field goals in the first half. At their best, the Bruins (15-1, 5-0 Pac-10) conjured up an 18-0 run in 5:53 to gain separation for what would become the rest of the game.
UCLA made 21 of 39 field goals (53.8 percent) in the first half to take a 45-18 lead after 20 minutes, the lowest point total for Oregon in a half of basketball this season.
The Bruins again outshot the Ducks, 51.4 percent to 48.3 percent, in the second half to bring about the final score.
Befitting a team ranked in the top 10 nationally, UCLA took full advantage of Oregon’s miscues. The Bruins scored 33 points off Duck turnovers (Oregon scored eight off of 15 UCLA turnovers). UCLA scored 16 second-chance points off of 19 offensive rebounds.
Finally, the Ducks were held without a single fast-break point, an astounding number for a Paul Westhead-coached, fast-breaking team.
Bruins forward Markel Walker came off the bench to lead all scorers with 14 points (6 of 9 shooting). Walker was one of five Bruins in double-figures for scoring; guard Doreena Campbell had 13 points, guard Darxia Morris and forward Atonye Nyingifa had 12 apiece, and forward Jasmine Dixon had 11.
Amanda Johnson led the Ducks with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Nicole Canepa was the second-leading scorer on the day, with eight points off the bench for Oregon.
Point guard Nia Jackson scored seven points, making just one of five field goals but going 5 of 6 from the free throw line. The performance snapped a 17-game series of double-digit scoring games for Jackson, who now averages 16.3 points per game.
