The Oregon beach volleyball team won’t soon forget its performance on Sunday.
Up against Stanford in the final of six matches in the Bay Area, Oregon beat the Cardinal for the first time in school history, 3-2.
The win broke a five-match losing streak for the Ducks (2-8).
In the morning match, Oregon lost to St. Mary’s 3-2.
Oregon and Stanford squared off in the opening weekend of play. The Ducks lost that match 4-1, but with a different lineup, they squeaked out the win.
The Ducks began with a few important wins at the bottom of the lineup. No. 5 pair of Haley McLaren and August Raskie defeated their Stanford opponents in three sets 19-21, 22-20, 15-11. Oregon’s No. 4 combo of Lauren Page and Maddy Silberger-Frank took their set 17-21, 21-19, 15-13.
Stanford bounced back to even the match at 2-2 with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. That left it up to the No. 1 pair of Kacey Nady and Liz Brenner. Stanford won the first set 21-18, but Nady and Brenner took the second 22-20 and the third 15-12 to pick up the win.
Against St. Mary’s, Oregon had wins at the No. 5 spot with McLaren and Raskie and the No. 3 spot with Amanda Benson and Lindsey Vander Weide.
Next up: The Ducks head to Seattle for a match against Washington on April 16. That will conclude the regular season.
