Oregon Volleyball concluded the Oregon Classic with a 3-0 sweep of UC Davis Saturday night at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks (3-2) did not lose a match or a set during the tournament.
However, UC Davis made Oregon earn the match early as the Ducks trailed for most of the first set. With UC Davis leading 20-16, Oregon head coach Jim Moore was forced to call a timeout. Oregon responded well out of the timeout with a 9-2 run to win the first set of the match.
“Everybody wants to say they call a timeout, say something and it works,” Moore said. “There’s a lot of times it doesn’t work. They knew they had to square themselves away. They did a very good job.”
In set two, the Ducks gave up the first point of the set but never trailed again and won the set 25-16, finishing on a 10-2 run. Oregon came out of the locker room for the third set playing the way they hoped to start the game.
“We talked about coming out with a lot of intensity, and I think in the first game we just over thought it and didn’t do it,” sophomore Lindsey Vander Weide said. “It obviously should not take us that long to get going and we know that.”
Oregon scored the first five points of the set and led 12-3 on its way to a 25-10 win for set three. Brooke Van Sickle led the team with nine kills while Vander Weide added seven kills and 12 digs in the match. Ronika Stone, Vander Weide and Amanda Benson were named to the Oregon Classic All-Tournament team, with Stone named the MVP.
The Ducks will hit the road on Tuesday to take on Seattle University at 6 p.m.
