No. 60 Oregon women’s tennis came back with vengeance in its win over Virginia Tech Sunday, after being swept by Texas Tech on Saturday.
The win over Virginia Tech was Oregon’s first win over a top-3o opponent in five years.
“We came out tentative the first day and did not convert during the pressure points,” head coach Alison Silverio told GoDucks. “Today, we performed better in the pressure situations.”
Oregon earned its first point of the day with a win from Kennan Johnson and Christi Woodson in doubles. The duo won its doubles match 6-1.
Marlou Kluiving and Shweta Sangwan followed up that win with a 6-2 takedown of their Virginia Tech opponents to secure the doubles point heading into singles play.
Johnson and Alyssa Tobita both beat ranked opponents to earn two singles points. Oregon’s match winning point came from Kluiving, who took down Kelly Williford of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
The win for Oregon is not just a confidence-booster, but a necessary win to start the season in a positive direction.
Next up, the Ducks will take on Idaho at home on Saturday.
