ASUO Executive candidates Ashley Rees and Jael Anker-Lagos are prohibited from campaigning until the end of this week’s primary elections and are forbidden from campaigning in the residence halls until Monday, the Elections Board ruled Friday afternoon.
The ruling states the ticket was “in violation of election laws” because a “member of the campaign committee” was soliciting students to vote in the residence halls. The decision came in response to a grievance against the ticket filed Thursday by ASUO Student Senate Seat 8 candidate Kyle McKenzie, in which he asked for “severe actions” to be taken against the campaign.
Rees told the Emerald the student has been affiliated with the campaign, but acted in the dorms without the permission or knowledge of the official campaign.
University Housing rules prohibit “commercial solicitation, advertising, promotion and commercial transactions are prohibited in all areas.”
Some exceptions are allowed, but candidates cannot go door to door or campaign in dining areas.
The board found that the student in question was a member of the campaign because she was wearing a T-shirt that she received from the campaign, had previously handed out flyers for the campaign and had attended a volunteer meeting where rules were discussed.
“In giving this student these privileges within the campaign process, the candidates were acknowledging her as someone who had permission to act on their behalf,” according to the ruling.
Rees said she is “disappointed” by the ruling but accepts the board’s decision.
“This is a disappointment, but we’re happy with what we’ve done so far,” she said.
