FREELANCE EDITOR
The freelance editor is responsible for recruiting freelance writers,
assigning stories to them and editing their work. The freelance editor is also responsible for producing approximately eight supplements in addition to his or her freelance duties, and will be specifically expected to:
— Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of any issues that need to be
covered and see that no pertinent news is missed.
— Work with freelancers and Emerald staff members to generate story ideas.
— Assign stories to freelancers and keep them on track.
— Coordinate with the graphics department to ensure as many stories as
possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tip sheets, and when appropriate, by sending reporters out with a camera.
— Assist freelancers in writing and in improving their work, and edit all freelance work for inaccuracy, things left out, bad grammar, poor organization, libel and improper style (according to Associated Press and Emerald style).
— Keep track of freelance stories in progress to ensure no overlapping with staff coverage.
— Make sure all freelancers finish all writing on deadline.
— Attend required staff meetings, calendar meetings twice a week and budget meetings at 4:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday.
— Advise the editor in chief on hiring decisions.
— Keep regular office hours (at least two hours a day, Sunday through
Thursday).
— Organize freelance meetings, as appropriate.
— Drum up recruits through any or all of the following means (or any other way):
- — Visiting appropriate journalism/writing classes
- — Conducting open houses for freelancers (coordinated with the editor)
- — Operating information tables
— Make sure all freelancers are eligible (i.e. currently enrolled University students).
— Set individual goals each term to improve your journalistic skills.
Requirements: Must be enrolled as a student at the University of Oregon when the position begins. Must be able to work about 15 hours per week.
