The Lane County Bill of Rights Defense Committee will hold a meeting titled “The Erosion of Human Rights since September 11” on Oct. 24, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Prince Lucien Campbell Hall. Speakers will address concerns that the USA Patriot Act, as it is being applied in Lane County, may erode the civil rights of citizens and non-citizens alike.
Scheduled speakers include Teuta Norman, an immigration attorney, and Lauren Regan, a civil rights attorney.
The Patriot Act was passed by Congress a year ago in the wake of the September 2001 terrorist attacks.
“The meeting will provide an opportunity for students to learn how the Patriot Act has decimated our Bill of Rights and to clarify the significance of this unconstitutional legislation,” said Nathaniel N-T, co-director of the University of Oregon Survival Center, the event’s sponsor.
