Adrian Gilmore is a 25-year-old law student.
Oregon Daily Emerald: Are there any issues that are particularly relevant to the students you represent?
Gilmore: An issue that’s important to not only law students, but all students, is the tuition surcharge. And law students are on semesters, so coming up with and extra $250 is a lot to ask. And I’m out of state. On top of other fees that the University charges, tuition is a major burden for students, and the administration should help out with this. One of the options would be going to the administration and asking them to pick up some of the extra charges. I think all students are affected by this and it’s important to get the administration involved.
Emerald: How would you figure out how to spend the surplus?
Gilmore: Negotiating with students and student groups is the best way to get an understanding of how to allocate incidentals to groups. Publications like the Emerald provide good resources for understanding students’ needs because it’s the voice of the students. Negotiation is the best process — just being open to any and all suggestions.
Emerald: OK, how would you interact with student groups?
Gilmore: Holding meetings and just talking to people, and, like I said, keeping up to date with certain publications like the Emerald — making students a part of the negotiation process.
Emerald: What’s the most important part of Section 5 of the student senate rules and why?
Gilmore: Section 5, I think that’s the duties of the senate seat. Yeah, I think the most important part of the duties is just making sure there is equal and fair representation. Being present at senate meetings, being alert to the needs of students and the responsibilities.
Emerald: What is the most important thing you should know in order to deal with the budget process?
Gilmore: I think accountability is an important part. Knowing where money is going and how it is being used. Often times problems arise with budgets where large amounts of money are being spent and it’s difficult to track where it’s going. It’s important to manage finances so the budget can be spent more efficiently.
Emerald: And my last question is under the Senate rules — who is responsible for maintaining the senate Web site?
Gilmore: The senate Web site. I think it’s the senate president, or is it the vice president ?
Emerald: Yeah, the vice president. Thanks, that’s it.
