There is no rest for the wicked, but as the heavy schedule of events this Halloween might show, the wicked don’t necessarily want to rest. Here is a look at Friday’s slate of events for all the costumed heathens.
The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies will be performing an all-ages show 9 p.m. at the McDonald Theatre, located at 1010 Willamette St. The local group, which is billing itself as the Scary Poppin’ Daddies for this performance, garnered national attention with their platinum-selling swing album “Zoot Suit Riot” in 1997. Openers for the show will be the group Vagiant UK. Tickets are on sale for $13 at TicketsWest outlets; doors open at 8 p.m.
Local café and restaurant Luna will be hosting two performances on Halloween night. The first is singer/songwriter Erik Muiderman, who will be performing from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. There is no cover charge for his performance. The second performance planned for the evening is the Deb Cleveland Band, a local soul group. The performance begins at 9:30 p.m. and has a $6 cover charge. Luna is located at 30 E. Broadway. Awards will also be presented for the best, scariest and sexiest costumes.
The Lane County Bill of Rights Defense Committee will be holding a Halloween Bash at the new Cozmic Pizza venue on the corner of West 8th Avenue and Charnelton Street. The event will feature the Middle Eastern dance band Alanar On Fire and Jupiter Hollow. There will also be a costume contest, fortune telling and a “Patriot Act Pinata” at midnight. Ticket prices range from $6 to $10. The Bash begins at 6:30 p.m.
The WOW Hall will also be holding Halloween festivities, with The Sugar Beets and Taarka performing. A haunted house will also be set up for the performance; costumes are encouraged. Doors open at 8 p.m. with The Sugar Beets performing first at 8:30 p.m. Taarka will perform at 11 p.m. and will celebrate the release of their second album. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. The WOW Hall is located at 291 W. 8th Ave.
The Fifth Street Public Market is hosting a plethora of events on Friday as part of a benefit for FOOD for Lane County. There will be trick-or-treating for kids at all retail stores, live music and a silent auction on items donated by Market merchants.
Live bands will include the Metal Detectors, Choco Blanco, Hip Pocket, Saltlick, the John Shipe Band and Mood Area 52. The entertainment begins at 4 p.m. and admission is three canned food items.
The University is not without its own events, as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” will be shown at the EMU Ballroom at 9 p.m. Along with a showing of the film, a costume contest and other events are planned. Tickets are $6 for students, $8 for the general public and can be purchased at the EMU Ticket Office.
The Oregon Ballroom Dance Club will be holding “The Great Pumpkin Ball” on campus. The event will be in 220 Gerlinger and will include beginning waltz and salsa lessons, intermediate salsa lessons and a parade of costumes, as well as an open dance. Dance lessons will run from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., followed by the dance itself, which will go until 11:30 p.m. Tickets are $4 for students and $5 for the general public.
