I have found a way to beat the system.
Soon, voters will probably shoot down Measure 28 in record numbers at
the
polls. The measure raises a few hundred million dollars for state
programs
that would otherwise be axed. It’s a tax increase, Oregonians hate tax
increases, so it’s probably going down in flames, for better or worse.
If 28 fails, the University will raise tuition by $10 a credit hour for
winter
and spring term. This would normally concern me: My credit cards are
maxed out as it is, so I think I’ll have to get a Diners Club card or
some
other quality plastic just to pay tuition.
Luckily for me, I’m cutting class almost every day this term. It’s
pretty
hard for the University to charge me 10 bucks a credit hour when I’m
skipping, isn’t it?
This past week, I missed both days of my sociology class, skipped
computer-assisted reporting on Tuesday because my assigment wasn’t done
and just for good measure, missed linguistics on Monday and Wednesday
and
came in 10 minutes late for Friday’s class — we had a test, so I
figured I
should be there.
It’s not that I don’t value my education. It’s just that I like
sleeping
in during the mornings and writing good stories at the Emerald more so.
And come Wednesday morning, I can sleep late knowing that my tuition
might
go up, but the University’s unlikely to charge me — they’d have to
find me
first.
