The Oregon men’s tennis team capped off an electric night Friday by beating Washington for the first time in 10 years, 4-1. In front of its biggest crowd of the season, the Ducks improved to 10-1 on the season and were able to handle the Huskies for the first time since Feb. 29, 2004.
The Ducks opened the match by taking the doubles point with relative ease, something that has become a staple of their game this spring. Dan Maasland and Joey Swaysland would win their no. 2 match, 8-2 to improve to 8-1 this Spring and Jayson Amos and Daniel Sardu were able to handle their no. 3 opponents, winning 8-4. Amos and Sardu are 7-3 in dual doubles this spring. The Ducks have now won the doubles point 10 out of their 11 opportunities this year.
Washington however, would test the Ducks in singles play as a group of its players held leads after the first set.
Amos would provide the first singles victory, winning 6-3, 6-4 to put his record at 14-3 on the season and the Ducks up 2-0. Shortly after Amos’s victory, Emmett Egger defeated Swaysland 6-4,6-3 to make the score 2-1.
The drama would continue to escalate as the night progressed and Kevin Farin, after being at the brink of losing the second set, rallied to win 6-2, 7-5 over Gal Hakak. Sardu would then take care of his opponent moments later, winning 6-4, 6-4.
The victory marks the first win for Oregon against Washington in 17 matches.
Robin Cambier’s bid to break the program’s all-time winning singles record was put on delay Friday. He would trade sets with his Washington opponent and his match would go unfinished after Sardu clinched the victory for the Ducks.
The Ducks will next host No. 15 Boise St. on Sunday March, 3 at the Student Tennis Center.
