Bob’s Burgers: One of the most underappreciated comedies of the past year, this is a show that just wraps you in its sensibility. The great alternative comedy; the genuine positive energy, and even the commitment to having new, original musical numbers in every episode. 23 minutes isn’t long enough to appreciate the genius of Bob’s Burgers; it’s a show best consumed hours at a time. Plus, the consistently amazing holiday episodes (for both Christmas and Thanksgiving), make it the perfect seasonal pick.
Bojack Horseman: A smart, wisecracking dark comedy about a fading 90’s sitcom star, who struggles with alcoholism, depression and the constant thirst to stay relevant. With actors from hit shows such as: Breaking Bad, Community and Arrested Development. Oh and the lead character is an anthropomorphic horse. It’s a hilarious and honest look at modern Hollywood, with just enough of an absurdest twist to make even the darkest turns of the story feel okay.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. : I know what you’re thinking. “I already tried getting into this show, and it was abysmal! Why are you lying to me? What have I done to wrong you?” And you’re right, mostly. This spin-off series that investigates smaller mysteries in the larger Marvel universe starts out with a string of really weak episodes. In fact, the entire first half of the first season is downright bland. But once the show crosses over with the events depicted in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it takes on legitimate stakes and starts getting downright addictive. My advice: leave the show on in the background while you get more important things done, pay attention enough to get a handle on the characters, then start paying real attention around episode 9.
Fireplace For Your Home: This is a 60-minute HD video of a crackling fireplace, underscored by cheap, license-free Christmas music. That’s it – nothing more. Yet, this might be the one “show” on Netflix I’ve rewatched more than any other. From Black Friday until New Year’s Day, it is the only thing I can have on while studying, reading or writing. It’s festive and reminds us all to cherish this season and to make it special. We only get one-twelfth of the year to embrace holiday cheesiness without restraint. Why not take advantage?
What to binge-watch while you binge-eat this Thanksgiving
