It was a lackluster performance from No. 22 Oregon in the first round of The Prestige at Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA.
The Ducks finished the day tied with Iowa State for 23rd place out of 24 teams, a considerable drop-off from their most recent tournament in Hawaii. Not one member of the team scored under 70 and everyone but Nate Stember shot over par.
Oregon is currently one stroke behind the pairing of UC-Davis and San Francisco and two strokes behind the trio of Chattanooga, Baylor and UCLA.
Stember started his round hot, going par-or-better in every hole until his 12th, but had only one birdie until that point. He had two bogeys in a row, but followed that with two birdies in his last five holes to push his total to a one-under 70.
Stember was just able to break into the top-25, as he is currently tied for 24th.
Gregory Solhaug shot two birdies, but his three bogeys and a double-bogey led to a three-over 74 first round for the Norwegian. Both of those birdies were on the back half of his round and he was par-or-better on every other hole in the back nine.
Solhaug looks to carry this momentum to a more positive second round, as he sits tied for 76th with his teammate Hugh Adams.
Adams, a freshman, saw his first action of the spring season on Monday and turned in a solid performance. Two birdies in the first half of his round had him one-under going into the back nine.
However, two straight bogeys to begin the latter half and two later on meant that his two birdie, five bogey performance gave him a three-under 74 to open The Prestige.
Fifth-year Owen Avrit started his first eight holes even with one birdie and one bogey, but his ninth hole would be the telltale sign for the rest of the afternoon. On nine, Avrit double-bogeyed and would not go under par again, picking up two bogeys en route to a four-over 75 first round.
Avrit is currently tied for 87th out of 120 golfers.
Lastly, Aiden Krafft, whose performance didn’t count for the overall team score, had the Ducks’ worst score of the day at a six-over 77. His round included two birdies, four bogeys and two double-bogeys.
It was a very inconsistent round for Krafft, who displayed similar tendencies at the Amer Ari Invitational and currently sits tied for 104th place.
Each of the Ducks has more to give the team than what they did on Monday. It was the first round on a tough par-71 course, so Oregon will be better adjusted and hope to climb the leaderboard considerably in Tuesday’s round.
