No. 22 Oregon’s week got much better at the Prestige at Greg Norman Course at PGA West in La Quinta, CA, as the Ducks had three of their four in team play shoot under par.
The Ducks moved up to a tie for 15th out of the 24 teams after a seven-under day as a team. Oregon is tied with Northwestern, it sits one stroke behind conference-mates UCLA and Oregon State and it sits one stroke ahead of Baylor, Cal Poly and LMU.
Nate Stember, who had been tied for 24th out of 120 golfers going into the second round, definitely had a round to forget. After a strong start to his spring season, Stember had his first real blemish of a round.
The fifth-year’s day started out negative after two early bogeys. Pars on the rest of his front nine and two bogeys in the back nine practically sealed an over-par day for him, but he fought back with two birdies out of his last three holes.
Stember’s scores didn’t count towards the team’s today, which benefited their score tremendously. He shot a two-over 73 and is currently placed tied for 46th at one-over overall.
Freshman Hugh Adams opened his second round so far this spring with a complete, par-or-better front nine that included three birdies. His back nine started with a par, a bogey and a birdie on the first three holes.
Adams carried that momentum to an unblemished finish in his last six holes, parring each. He currently ranks tied for 39th at an even score so far in the tournament.
Owen Avrit had an outstanding day, aside from the glaring blunder being his double-bogey on hole 13, which was on only his fourth hole of the day. Avrit had five birdies throughout the round, while also remaining par-or-better on every hole other than 13.
Avrit shot a three-under 68 and sits at one-over for the tournament, which is tied for 46th place with Stember.
After his worst performance so far this spring with a 77 in the first round, Aiden Krafft had a very consistent three-under 68 with five birdies and just two bogeys. He is currently tied for 66th in the tournament and is three-over.
His addition to the team score today was welcome and crucial, as Krafft has spent a lot of time as an individual participant so far this spring.
Gregory Solhaug continued his subpar (only figuratively) tournament with just two birdies and four bogeys in his second round. He shot a two-over 73, which is one stroke better than his round yesterday.
Solhaug is five-over so far in this competition and is currently tied for 82nd place.
The Ducks are placed tied for 15th and very close to the competition around them. It should be an exciting final round in La Quinta on Wednesday, as Oregon has a real chance at securing a top-10 position and moving up the top-25.
