On its first day of spring play, No. 18 Oregon faced off against nine top-25 ranked teams at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate Invitational at the Mauna Lani North Course in Kamuela, HI.
Through its first nine holes, Oregon shot -9 collectively, good enough for eighth in the invitational.
Overall, the Ducks finished -11 and tied for 10th on the day, which is good enough to make the cut. They will need to improve performance across the board to prove the Ducks want to prove themselves as a real contender.
Fifth year Nate Stember started off his day lackluster, having to recover from an early bogey while not being able to birdie. His strong back half performance, including four birdies, pushed him to -5 on the day and a tie for 12th overall.
Eric Doyle remained in the mix for the top ten overall until a bogey late in his round. A great first round of the spring season for the Junior. He finished his day as Oregon’s second best golfer, shooting -4 on the day. He sits tied for 22nd overall.
Greyson Leach finished his day -2 after three birdies on his front nine, but a lackluster back half. He had two bogeys in his second nine holes that brought him down slightly. Leach will look to improve in his later round play going into Friday.
Owen Avrit played mediocre by his standards to start his day. He mostly maintained -2 throughout the round, but a brutal double bogey to end the day brought him even to end the round. Avrit showed he has it in him to improve Friday, as he has another chance at this course.
Greg Solhaug had a day to forget. The Norwegian senior began the round with a double bogey, which was tough to come back from. However, Solhaug gritted his teeth and found a way to go even, and a fantastic eagle brought him to -2.
His last hole would be one to forget.
Solhaug shot a triple bogey to end the round, which brought him all the way to +1 for the day, Oregon’s worst score.
Oregon’s individual golfer Aiden Krafft had a very mixed bag for the day, shooting five birdies and an eagle, but he also shot four bogeys. His shot -3 on the day, which put him safely in the top nine for the individual cut. Krafft had a tremendous day in some ways and horrible in others, so finding consistency is crucial to improvement on the weekend.
The Ducks had a lackluster Thursday due to their inconsistency and failure to capitalize on big birdies and eagles. As a top-25 team, Oregon will look to finish this weekend in a higher position than 10th, which will prove to itself and the rest of the field that it is a contender for major trophies.
