Arizona
After a somewhat uneven start to the conference season, Arizona’s men’s basketball team is finding its rhythm. The Wildcats (16-8, 7-4 Pac-12) won three of their past four games, including a road sweep of Cal and Stanford last week. Sean Miller’s bunch has a balanced scoring offense, led by senior guard Kyle Fogg (12.5 ppg), junior forward Solomon Hill (12.2 ppg), senior forward Jesse Perry (11.8 ppg), and freshman guard Nick Johnson (9.2 ppg). @@http://pac-12.org/SPORTS/BasketballM/Standings.aspx@@ @@http://www.arizonawildcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/ariz-m-baskbl-sched.html@@ @@http://www.arizonawildcats.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/ariz-m-baskbl-mtt.html@@ @@http://www.pac-12.org/portals/7/images/MBasketball/2011-12-stats/HTML/ARIZ.HTM@@
Arizona State
The No. 19 Arizona State women’s tennis team lost the doubles point, but still found a way to defeat San Diego 4-3 on Sunday. Arizona State’s singles players reeled off four consecutive match wins to overcome the early deficit (San Diego won the No. 3 singles point as well) to top the Toreros. The Sun Devils will return to action on Feb. 17 when they host Northern Arizona. California
Cal’s powerhouse men’s rugby team has steamrolled the competition in 2012. In compiling a 9-0 record, Cal has defeated each of its opponents by at least 45 points. The most lopsided decision was a 109-0 throttling of Stanford. Most recently, Cal topped Arizona State 59-7 in Tempe, Ariz. In the win, the Bears scored nine tries from six different players, including a hat trick from sophomore fullback Jake Anderson. The Bears will resume their season on Feb. 18 when they host the University of British Columbia. @@http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/sched/cal-m-rugby-sched.html@@ @@http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-rugby/recaps/020512aab.html@@
Colorado
After cruising to a 12-0 record in the nonconference portion of its schedule, Colorado’s women’s basketball team has struggled mightily since the start of Pac-12 play. The Buffaloes (15-7, 4-7 Pac-12) have lost six of their past eight games and were swept by Oregon and Oregon State over the weekend. Colorado ranks last in the Pac-12 in turnover margin and is in the bottom half of the conference in many major offensive categories, including three-point percentage; in the Buffaloes’ 67-62 loss to Oregon on Saturday, Colorado was 7 for 33 from three-point range. The No. 8 Oregon State gymnastics team scored an impressive 195.975-194.675 win over host No. 21 Washington last Friday. The Beavers, who improved to 4-0 on the young season with the match win, were led by junior All-American Makayla Stambaugh, who won the all-around portion of the competition with a 39.350. Oregon State senior Leslie Mak finished second in the individual all-around by scoring 39.3000. Stanford
The top-ranked Stanford women’s water polo team won its third-straight Stanford Invitational title by defeating UCLA 9-5 on Sunday. The Cardinal, which improved to 6-0 with the victory over the Bruins, used an impressive second-half scoring run to distance itself from its interstate rival. Leading 5-4 3:17 into the third quarter, Stanford closed the game on a 4-1 run, highlighted by two-goal performances from Victoria Kennedy, Kaley Dodson and Kelsey Suggs. UCLA
Former Florida State assistant coach Cori Close initially struggled upon her return to Southern California. A UC Santa Barbara alum, Close took over the UCLA women’s basketball program from Nikki Caldwell, who enjoyed plentiful success in Westwood before leaving to coach LSU. But after suffering an embarrassing 83-62 home loss to Oregon in mid-January to drop the Bruins’ Pac-12 record to 3-4, UCLA has won four straight games over Utah, Colorado, Washington and Washington State, vaulting UCLA to sole possession of third place in the conference. @@http://www.uclabruins.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/close_cori00.html@@ @@http://articles.latimes.com/2011/apr/03/sports/la-sp-0404-ucla-nikki-caldwell-20110404@@ @@http://www.uclabruins.com/sports/w-baskbl/sched/ucla-w-baskbl-sched.html@@
USC
USC’s men’s basketball program has seen better days. At 6-18 (1-10 Pac-12), the Trojans are dead last in the the woeful Pac-12 Conference and haven’t been competitive in a number of their losses, including a 69-41 shellacking at Washington on Saturday. As such, it’s no surprise to see that USC ranks near the bottom of the Pac-12 in many major statistical categories, including scoring offense (12th), scoring margin (11th), free-throw percentage (12th), field-goal percentage (12th) and three-point percentage (12th). Utah
Utah’s football and men’s basketball teams may not have found great success in the school’s first year in the Pac-12 Conference, but the gymnastics team has. The Utes are ranked No. 1 in the nation, a ranking cemented by a thrilling 197.150-196.950 win over No. 4 Georgia Friday night. With 14,926 fans in attendance, Utah sealed the victory when sophomore Corrie Lothrop and senior Stephanie McAllister reeled off 9.95 floor routines to close the competition. Washington
Washington women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff enjoyed plenty of success when he was the head women’s basketball coach at Xavier. He led the Musketeers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a berth in the Elite Eight. His first year in Seattle hasn’t been as smooth. The Huskies (12-9, 4-7 Pac-12) are tied for eighth place in the conference and had lost four of five league games before pulling a surprising road upset of USC, which is tied for fourth place in the Pac-12. @@http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/mcguff_kevin00.html@@ @@http://pac-12.org/SPORTS/BasketballW/Standings.aspx@@ @@http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/w-baskbl/sched/wash-w-baskbl-sched.html@@
Washington State
2011-12 hasn’t been the kindest season for Washington State’s swimming team. The Cougars are 2-10 in their two-team meets this season and finished fourth in the Hawkeye Invitational. Many of Washington State’s meet losses have been lopsided — a 160-89 loss to Cal in November was particularly cringe-worthy. Most recently, the Cougars fell 159.5-134.5 to Idaho on Saturday. In a strange twist, Washington State actually outscored the Vandals in the swimming events, but was hammered in the diving portion; Idaho recorded 32 points in diving while the Cougars don’t sponsor diving. Washington State’s next meet will be a part of the Pac-12 Championship to be held Feb. 22. @@http://www.wsucougars.com/sports/w-swim/sched/wast-w-swim-sched.html@@ @@http://www.wsucougars.com/sports/w-swim/recaps/020412aaa.html@@
