With the pace of our news cycle, it’s easy to miss the latest in technology news. Not to mention many of us have better things to do than stare at their RSS feeds while everyone else is enjoying their summer. So here are some things you may have missed from the last few months:
The iPhone 5 is out: On Sept. 21, Apple released the latest iteration of its popular smartphone line, now with a taller screen, new design, LTE (high-speed) support and other hardware improvements. It also shipped with a slate of new iOS apps to help travelers.
Apple Maps: One of those apps, however, has received more than a bit of backlash. Apple Maps, the replacement for Google Maps as the iPhone’s default navigation app, has featured more than its fair share of inconsistencies with the real world, including misplacing major monuments and landmarks. Apple has come forth and apologized for the low quality of the app, promising to improve it over time.
Borderlands 2 released: Gearbox software’s sequel to their Action-RPG/first-person-shooter hybrid was released on Sept. 18 to rave reviews. Critics cite addictive loot-gathering, satisfying core gameplay and sharp writing as credits towards this game’s success, improving on the shortcomings found in the first game in the series.
Valve Software is working on wearable computing: The game industry’s mercurial darlings, Valve Software, have set their sights on developing wearable computers for virtual reality games. Though they aren’t the first company to approach this technology, Valve is known for their groundbreaking games, including Team Fortress 2, the Half-Life series and Dota 2. Valve hopes to bring this pedigree to the new hardware platform.
