When the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles come to Autzen Stadium on Saturday, they’ll bring with them the up-tempo spread offense that led them to an Ohio Valley Conference championship in 2011. While the Golden Eagles’s offense is similar to Chip Kelly’s own spread offense, it’s not quite the same.
“They do a lot different,” Kelly said. “People think ‘spread’ means everybody runs the same thing. I don’t think anybody’s very close to anybody. What Mike Leach does is different than what Rich Rodriguez does is different than what we do.”
From what he’s seen on tape, Kelly said the Golden Eagles tend to operate with more three and four receiver sets than the Ducks, creating an entirely different look offensively. As for the Golden Eagles’ play tempo, Kelly says the jury is still out because the edited game film the Ducks have from the Golden Eagles wins over Hampton and North Greenville don’t show how quickly Tennessee Tech lines up.
