The 2009 Oregon football season was a roller coaster ride unlike anything seen in recent memory. Beginning in Boise with the loss of both the game and star running back LeGarrette Blount to an afternoon getting picked apart by emerging Stanford star Andrew Luck, Duck fans were reaching for the antacids each and every weekend. The contest in Tuscon, Arizona would trump them all with a drive for the ages and propel the Ducks to a Civil War for the Roses.
The scenarios going into the November night were clear cut: An Oregon victory would set up a contest with Oregon State the following week for the Pac-10 title. With a Wildcats win, Arizona would win the championship by beating Arizona State. The Ducks jumped out to an early lead but Arizona caught fire and stormed ahead to a 24-14 lead. Morgan Flint banked in a field goal to tie the game with eight minutes to go, but Oregon still found itself down a touchdown with under four minutes to go.
Quarterback Jeremiah Masoli would quickly guide his offense across midfield, but got stalled with a third-and-long on the Arizona 46. LaMichael James would take the ensuing hand off for 15 yards and the Ducks were back in business. Oregon would face another do-or-die play with 23 seconds left and a fourth down at the Arizona 23. Masoli found the sure-handed Jeff Maehl for eight yards and two plays later, tight end Ed Dickson in the back of the end zone.
The drive didn’t end there though, with the game-tying extra point still at hand. Holder Nate Costa scooped up the low snap and got it down in time for Flint to convert the kick and Oregon would take all the momentum into overtime, where a Masoli touchdown run proved the difference. Costa would receive Pac-10 Special Teams Player of the Week for the play – almost unheard of for a holder.
