The Oregon Ducks have landed yet another high-profile recruit in Arik Armstead, a 6’8”, 275 lbs defensive linemen from Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, Calif. Armstead was initially a USC commit but later pulled his commitment before choosing Oregon in a gathering at his family’s church on Sunday.
Some who follow recruiting argued that Chip Kelly’s recent flirting with the NFL may have discouraged Armstead and other top recruits from choosing Oregon, but Armstead told the Sacramento Bee that Kelly’s honesty was a big part of his decision.
“I just liked how honest he was,” Armstead told the newspaper. “Oregon coaches never talk bad about any other program. So many do that negative recruiting. Oregon recruited me without really recruiting me.”
Armstead is expected to be a two-sport athlete at Oregon, bringing his tall frame to Dana Altman’s men’s basketball team. He will enroll in school in time to participate in spring football practice.
