Sunday afternoon the Oregon men’s tennis team remained undefeated, beating the University of Missouri-Kansas City to move to 4-0 on the season. The Ducks, who have yet to drop a single match in dual competition, were impressive in the lopsided 7-0 victory.
Sophomore Alex Rovello shined in the No. 1 singles slot, besting Nino Hasandedic 6-3, 6-0 for the first singles point. In doubles, Rovello teamed with senior Douglas Mayeda for the second time this season to take down Gustavo Guerin and Conner Edward, 8-5. The Oregon duo is 2-0 while playing together. Seniors Jose Izquierdo and Sho Higuchi both won their matches, as Izquierdo topped Gustavo Guerin 6-3, 6-1 while Higuchi defeated Connor Edwards 6-0, 7-5. Next weekend, the Ducks take to the road for the first time as they travel to Denver to kick off February. “It was good weekend to get two wins,” said head coach Nils Schyllander to GoDucks.com. “We came out a little flat in doubles today after last night’s match. “Once we got going, I was pleased with the way we closed everything out and didn’t extend the matches today.”
The University of Oregon women’s tennis team was narrowly defeated in the second of a three-match road trip at No. 71 Santa Clara University (2-1) on Sat. (Jan .28), 4-3. The Ducks (2-1) dropped their first match against a ranked opponent this year.
The Ducks got a spirited effort from their singles players, but ultimately fell one match short. Oregon’s lone senior, Trudie du Toit, set the tone with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Maggie McGeorge.
