The University of Oregon’s head biologist Bruce Bowerman has joined a distinguished line of scientists stretching back to 1874 with his election to the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The UO biologist was one of 702 scientists elected as a fellow for the AAAS, the world’s largest scientific society, the UO reported Nov. 29.
Bowerman, who has been a biology professor at the UO since 1992, in addition to serving as the department head, was elected to the board by his peers for his pioneering contributions in roundworm developmental genetics.
Bowerman has also served three years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, as well as working as the director for the Institute of Molecular Biology from 2005 to 2011.
