The word out of Los Angeles is that an international union representing television technical workers has declared a strike against the Pac-12 Network.
According to the LA Times, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees released a statement condemning the Pac-12 Network for using non-union crews with lower wages, minimal benefits and job protection. The Times reports that negotiations with the network have been shot down.
“We respect individuals’ right to decide whether to be represented by a union,” the network said in a prepared statement. “Regardless of how they decide, we will remain focused on creating an environment that is inclusive, respectful and allows us to have direct relationships with our staff and contractors.”
Picket lines were to be set up at sporting events at schools around the conference including Washington, Arizona State, USC, Oregon and Oregon State.
ABC News reported that about 100 union employees — brandishing signs emblazoned with “Pac-12 Networks Unfair” — picketed the Galen Center yesterday where the USC men’s basketball team hosted No. 14 Minnesota.
