Aspects of the Annette Buchanan case were discussed last Thursday by Dean John Hulteng of the School of Journalism at the weekly Student Union luncheon discussion.
Hulteng said he would not comment on Miss Buchanan’s guilt or innocence, but rather on the legal and journalistic history and principles involved.
“The newsman is interested in gathering the information, not in divulging the source,” Hulteng said.
He continued by saying that professional people now covered by shield laws are protected from revealing information. In Oregon, doctors, lawyers, clergymen, secretaries, and spouses are protected by such a law. However, legal protection is not extended to journalists.
One student crystallized the arguments of the case by stating that two parties were contending to represent the public interest.
