Intramurals are some of the greatest activities the school has to offer. Participants can never have played a sport in their life, and that is one of their beauties – there are no cuts, and whoever wants to play can play. Playing an intramural also creates team atmosphere, where people can rediscover the days of coming together with teammates, having that common interest in competing or simply running around and having fun.
The division you sign up for dictates the level of competition you will see. If you are the type of person who doesn’t normally participate in athletic events, signing up for division three will allow you to go out and face others who may be looking to just get out there and have some fun, while getting some experience and exercise. Division one includes players who are a little more experienced, and are looking to play against the best competition in the sport. These are the players who likely played varsity sports in high school. Division two is in-between, for those who don’t want to compete against the tougher competition, but would still like a little bit of a challenge. If playing just for the fun and competition isn’t enough, the reward for winning one of these sports is a T-shirt, clearly indicating you were champion of an intramural sport.
For those who have grown up playing sports or any other competitive activity, it serves as a way to relive memories of the days when pregame rituals were used, whether it be blasting your favorite songs to get pumped up for the game, eating that special dinner before you play, or even just getting back to the times when you used to stretch.
The schedule gives you a time to look forward to all week, and knowing what you will get out of that time frame can be a relaxing feeling, knowing you will get to leave behind school, work and outside obligations for that one hour.
In addition, some of the most popular intramural sports are coed. Playing football, volleyball or basketball with the opposite sex is a great experience. In football, nothing makes me happier than when a girl catches a ball for a score, or watching her break the ankles of defenders. Seeing the faces of guys on the opposing team after a girl grabs the flags off the ball carrier is priceless, though their surprise is far from warranted, as some of the girls on the field are better than most guys. Even in basketball, when a girl steals the ball from a guy who played all through high school, and outplays the guys on her own team, nothing is more fun. There are few intramural sports that bring the height of enjoyment coed sports do.
There is no reason not to play an intramural sport. The range is so wide, from football to dodgeball, volleyball to floor hockey. If you can’t find people to play with you, there is even a Free Agent service, which will place you on a team with an opening. Intramurals will introduce you to new people who share common interests, and get you out doing something different from your typical schedule. Playing will keep you active, and as a result, should also keep you happy. Win or lose, the games are fun.
Go to the Student Recreation Center, sign up with your friends, get out there and have some fun.
