Interim softball coach named
Brent Rincon has been selected interim head coach of the softball program, Athletic Director Bill Moos announced Friday. Rincon, who was hired in August as one of two new assistants, takes over following the resignation of Rick Gamez on Oct. 1. Gamez was 168-164-1 in five seasons and resigned his post after financial irregularities in the team’s accounts were discovered.
Prior to being hired at Oregon, Rincon served as the athletic director and assistant principal at Tempe High in Arizona. Rincon also served as the head coach at two Arizona high schools — Corona Del Sol and McClintock.
Oregon assistant coach Jennifer Jaime will serve as the first assistant on an interim basis as well. Jaime played at Oklahoma and was part of the 2000 national championship team, which finished the season 66-8.
Women golfers finish 16th
Kathy Cho shot a 3-over 75 on Sunday as the Oregon women’s golf team finished 16th at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational, being played at the par-72, 6,154-yard Stanford Golf Course.
For the tournament, Cho, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii, had rounds of 79-74-75 to tie for 44th at 228.
Freshman Johnna Nealy had a final round 79 to tie for 76th at 240, while junior Kim Melrose finished 79th at 241 after carding a 79 on Sunday.
Tulsa ran away with the team title, shooting a 285 Sunday to defeat USC and Vanderbilt by 17 strokes.
Oregon’s 946 total easily outdistanced Washington State’s last place 969.
