Theta Chi, the fraternity cited on charges that it furnished alcohol to two underage University women, pleaded not guilty to the charges in Eugene Municipal Court. The fraternity didn’t appear in court Tuesday.
Instead, the fraternity’s legal representation, Thorp, Purdy, Jewett, Urness & Wilkinson P.C., mailed the not guilty plea several weeks ago, attorney Dwight Purdy said.
The fraternity was cited on Feb. 2 in connection with a Dec. 1 incident when two women attended a party at the house on 1125 E. 19th Ave. and were given alcohol, Eugene police said.
The 18- and 19-year-old women were taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center later that night and treated for alcohol poisoning, Eugene Police Department spokeswoman Pam Olshanski said.
EPD cited the fraternity as a whole for providing alcohol to a minor rather than individual fraternity members after consulting with the city prosecutor. EPD rarely cites entities on those charges and usually cites individuals, Olshanski said.
Purdy said representing the fraternity is no different than representing an individual and that he discusses the case with fraternity officers.
Theta Chi’s trial date has not yet been set.
