Oregon’s Rebekah Noble won the bronze medal in the women’s 800 meters Friday at the World Junior Championships in Beijing, China.
Noble, coming off a freshman season when she won the NCAA outdoor championship and Pacific-10 Conference Championship among other events in the 800, finished only .38 seconds behind with winner – Olga Cristea of Moldova (2 minutes, 4.52 seconds).
Noble was last with 100 meters remaining before she began her final kick.
“I’m very happy with my bronze, but I could have done better,” Noble said in a News Service Report. “I waited too long to kick.”
She ran a preliminary on Tuesday and a semifinal race on Wednesday before Friday’s feature.
Noble, whose personal best is 2:02.07, is the first American to make the event final.
Kenya’s Winny Chebet finished second with a time of 2:04.59.
