The weekend, highlighted by big wins and a grudge match between heavyweights, brought Oregon’s record to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Pacific-10 Conference.
The Ducks’ intensity was evident during both matches. Winning
24-11 and taking 7 of 10 matches from Cal State Bakersfield, Oregon was able to compete in every matchup. Against the Fresno State Bulldogs, the Ducks were able to take 8 of 10 matchups and seal a 31-7 victory.
The 197-pounders started both meets, as Shaun Dee and Tony Rolen both gave the Ducks quick and easy wins. The two set the tone for Oregon’s matches last Friday by “getting after it” on the mat. Dee won, 11-1 by major decision, with his opponent only scoring on an escape. Rolen refused to even let his opponent score, winning 6-0.
Chris Dearmon’s matchup against former Duck Cody Parker was a battle between the former sparring partners. Dearmon was able to control the match and feed off the crowd’s energy for a 7-3 win. The earlier match was a struggle for the Oregon heavyweight, as the Roadrunners’ Eric Parker scored key points at the end of the first period leading to a 5-0 shutout.
Ryan Dunn gave the Ducks two big wins on the day. Against Cal State Bakersfield he scored a two-point takedown with six seconds on the clock and gave the Ducks a 7-3 team lead over the Roadrunners early.
Oregon’s 133-pound Justin Pearch also was able to score a takedown with less than 10 seconds to go in the match to seal a victory.
Beau Malia filled in for Pearch against Fresno State. Against Boise State and Arizona State, underweight Malia and Dunn filled in for an injured Pearch, and both were able to pull out quality wins. Last Friday the Bulldogs saw their first win with the mismatch at 133 pounds, where they took advantage of Malia.
Skyler Woods stepped up for the Ducks. Against Cal State Bakersfield he forced the issue and held an early lead to preserve an 8-7 victory over the Roadrunners’ Matt Schumm. Against Fresno State, Woods was able to get a low-scoring victory over the Bulldogs’ Garrett Spooner, 3-1.
Jeremy McLaughlin, a fill-in, was able to overcome a loss in his Cal State Bakersfield match for a big win against the Bulldogs. He took the place of Cyle Hartzell, and the redshirt freshman took advantage of his opportunity to help his team trounce Fresno State.
Joey Bracamonte, Oregon’s 165-pound All-American, was able to enjoy a nice workout against Cal State, winning 10-5.
The only points Bracamonte’s opponent was able to manage were off
uncontested escapes. Against Fresno State, he was unable to wrestle due to Bulldog forfeits at 165 and 174 pounds.
Chet McBee, at 174 pounds, was the other Duck who sat out due to Fresno State’s forfeit, but inhis earlier match he wore out Cal State Bakersfield’s Garth Warra for a 5-3 win.
The last match of both meets showcased the Ducks’ Shane Webster. Webster scored a takedown 15 seconds into the match, and after he was taken down one minute into the match, he reeled off a 23-8 victory. The 184-pound Pac-10 Champion controlled a mild victory over Fresno State’s Greg Gifford with a 9-4 final score.
The Ducks enjoyed their most comfortable victories of the season and look to continue their recent success this Friday when they travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on Stanford. Last year the Ducks squeaked out a 22-21 victory over the Cardinal.unn gave the Ducks two big wins on the day.
