Current KWVA student general manager Charlotte Nisser will serve in the permanent general manager position for the campus radio station, the EMU announced last week.
The announcement comes after a hiring committee concluded a nationally advertised search that narrowed the choice between Nisser and Greg Jaquay, the general manager of a college radio station in California.
Nisser has served as student general manager of KWVA since 2001. The station, formerly a student government program completely run by students, became an EMU program on Jan. 1, a move that prompted the search for a full-time professional manager, EMU Director of Student Activities Greg Lobisser told the Emerald in May.
Nisser said the station is currently in a transitional phase because of the change, and it will work to become more closely associated with the EMU during the first stages of the transition. Nisser’s responsibilities will correspond with its new leadership, she said.
“I’ll have more administrative duties than I do now,” she said.
Nisser is currently working on her master’s degree in law, she said, but she is unsure if she will take time off from her studies to focus on her managerial duties. She said she didn’t think someone should necessarily work a full-time job and be a student simultaneously.
Nisser said she was excited for the chance to continue leading the station as she has for the past five years, but the station’s growth might take some time as it adjusts to being an EMU program.
“In the long run, I think there is a lot of possibility for KWVA,” Nisser said. “None of it will happen overnight.”
