This new section is to be a portion of the paper that is entirely tailored to the interests of you, the reader. It is meant to be a section that you can look to each day for something consistently interesting. It’s going to be on the same page each day, hence the name.
The section has revolving topics that are listed at the top of the page. Each day there will be a new topic. We decided to feature the “How To” for our first installment because we are hoping you’ll find it useful this summer. We’ll try to align the five rotating topics with current events, but because we publish only two days a week during the summer, the topics will cycle completely every two and a half weeks. During the school year, they will refresh each week.
Our other daily features includes “People,” which will shine the spotlight on the campus community with a profile feature of a professor, staff member, jani- tor or student on campus. “Issues” will tackle ethical questions and hot topic issues with a special column and on-the-street interviews. “Your Money” will address the unique financial situations of college students and will offer tips ranging from saving money to purchasing as an educated consumer. Finally, in “Media Lust” we will feature top photos from our award-winning photographers.
I must give credit where credit is due – the idea for “FourPlay” came from a conference of major college newspaper editors around the nation. In discussion, one issue that came up repeatedly was that readers want to see storytelling in their newspaper that goes beyond simply relaying the day’s timely information. Newspapers should be reflections of their communities.
They should be surprising and, most of all, they should be fun and useful. We’re hoping “FourPlay” will be a section you look forward to reading each day. One that will be useful, entertaining and surprising with each new editon. If you have any ideas for the section, or you think you or someone you know would make an interesting feature profile, please, feel free to give us a call or send me an e-mail. We’re here to serve you, the reader.
