Two bicyclists were involved in accidents Thursday near campus. Both were taken to the hospital.
The first accident occurred on Franklin Boulevard, near Track Town Pizza, when a man was found lying unconscious in the street. Some cars stopped, while others drove around the man around 4:45 p.m.
Stephen Hebert and his daughter, Katie Hebert, were driving down Franklin when they came across the scene.
“We pulled up while he was still unconscious,” Katie Hebert said. “Dad untangled his legs stuck between the bike.”
She said a cigarette was still stuck between the man’s lips.
At first, Stephen Hebert and his daughter believed the man to be the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Officers on the scene said it was possible that the unidentified man simply lost his balance near the median separating traffic on Franklin, a result of a possible medical or physiological condition. Officers also at the time did not rule out drugs.
Hebert, a medical doctor, checked the man’s pulse and concluded that his heart rate was normal and that he did not require chest compressions. He performed mouth-to-mouth to ensure steady breathing.
Paramedics revived the man before sending him to Sacred Heart Medical Center.
“Where am I? Who are these people?” the man said after he awoke.
Stephen Hebert also went to the hospital, which is typical for people who perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on strangers.
Another bicycle accident occurred at approximately 7:15 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Kinsrow Drive. The name of the cyclist was not immediately released.
Officer Dorman of the EPD said the cyclist, a young man, was struck by a car while riding down the wrong side of the street.
The accident was not a hit-and-run.
The cyclist suffered cuts to his face, which will probably require stitches, Dorman said.
A bad day for bicyclists on city streets
