There was plenty of action for the University women’s tennis team this weekend, which marked the last home matches of the year for the Ducks.
On Friday, Oregon took on No. 54 San Diego in what ended up being one of the closest matches of the year. The pressure was on for senior Ana Cecilia Olivos during the No. 3 singles match – the deciding factor in order for the Ducks to pull off the upset. And with all eyes on her, Olivos came up big for Oregon, taking the match 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Ducks, who defeated their third ranked opponent of the 2009 season. Sophomore Pavlina Smatova and freshman Maelie Janse van Rensburg also picked up singles wins.
Oregon took the doubles point as well, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches.
On Saturday, Oregon recognized its three seniors in their final home match of their careers and even with all the emotional distractions, Oregon showed up to play in a big way. The Ducks dominated in-state foe Portland State 7-0 to improve their record to 9-9 on the year.
Senior Carmen Seremeta led the way for Oregon, taking the No. 1 singles match, 6-1, 6-3. Smatova had another strong day as well, taking the No. 2 singles match. The Ducks had equally strong success in doubles play as they swept PSU.
Oregon will begin a three-day trip through California on Thursday to take on Cal Poly, No. 7 Stanford and No. 3 California.
