International Women’s Day is not recognized around the world.
In fact, it is not even a national holiday, but that won’t stop the ASUO Women’s Center from honoring and recognizing women around the globe tomorrow.
Vania Loredo, global feminist coordinator at the ASUO Women’s Center, said the event will open up an international community on campus and remind everyone why we celebrate women.
“International Women’s Day is an event that celebrates the fight for liberation and equality in the workplace, household and in society,” Loredo said. “The theme this year is consistent with the idea that regardless of the obstacle, women have always fought for what they believe in.”
The celebration will take place Friday at 7 p.m. in Agate Hall. Loredo said students should be prepared to take in music, dance and guest speakers who challenge traditional perceptions of women.
“It is important to understand the struggles that women have and the different perspectives that women hold,” Loredo said. “It is interesting to see the different cultures that are represented in different parts of the world.”
Loredo said the primary goal of International Women’s Day is to spotlight women and their cultures in all geographical regions of the world. From South America to the Middle East, Loredo said all women have varying cultures, perspectives and a story to tell.
Loredo believes it is important to hear and become familiar with women’s perspectives and cultures from all over the world and celebrate them on this special day.
“This is our opportunity to bring global communities of women to our campus and become more culturally connected,” Loredo said. “We have a sense of partnership with women anywhere in the world and we are going to honor every single woman in every society.”
Sat Pavon is an Indian dance instructor who will be performing an Indian folk dance at the event along with her students.
Pavon grew up in India and has many students from numerous countries coming to perform. She said they are a good representation of women from different cultures coming together to celebrate women all over the world.
She hopes to send out an inspiring message to the community.
“The more we can learn about one another’s culture, the more we can appreciate our differences and really see the beauty of diversity and really begin to enlighten ourselves,” she said. “There are endless possibilities.”
