As the regular season begins to wind down, it was another hit-or-miss weekend for the men’s and women’s tennis teams.
The women (7-13, 1-5) lost 5-2 at the hands of Washington on Friday, but bounced back the next day for a 4-3 victory over Washington State. The men (12-7, 0-4), meanwhile, also split their weekend series, earning a 5-2 win over Northern Arizona on Friday and but falling to No. 34 Arizona on Sunday.
Though few matches remain, the women are trying to establish some momentum after finally breaking an 11-match losing streak last weekend. An upset over No. 19 Washington would have helped, and the Ducks came awfully close.
The Huskies took the doubles point in the early part of the match, and went on to win the first two singles matches as well. Though Oregon fought back to cut the deficit to 3-2, Washington ultimately outlasted the Ducks by a score of 5-2.
It didn’t take long for the women to get back in the win column on Saturday. The Ducks earned the all-important doubles point early, and took three of the singles matches en route to a 4-3 win.
The men, ranked 70th in the nation but mired in a three-match losing streak, traveled to the desert in search of some key wins. Northern Arizona was first on the itinerary, and the Ducks got to work quickly.
After sweeping the doubles point, Oregon went on to win four singles matches and came away with a comfortable 5-2 win.
Two days later, the Ducks found themselves in Tucson facing off with No. 34 Arizona. Things did not go as smoothly there, as the Wildcats swept the doubles point and took four matches in singles play for the 5-2 win.
