Three more club sports teams received funding to go to their national championships Wednesday night.
The Senate gave out a total of nearly $18,000 in funding from its surplus account to the club teams for women’s lacrosse, cycling and disc golf. The Senate’s fund is often the sole recourse for club sports when they reach their national championships.
The disc golf team asked for reimbursement to pay for its national tournament in Augusta, Ga., which took place April 13-19. The team finished second in the top division and first in the second division of the tournament, while freshman Chris Becker finished first in the individual tournament. The team asked the Senate for $6,801 to pay for the trip after having raised half that amount themselves.
“It sounds like they’ve worked very hard and they did a fabulous job this year,” Sen. Hailey Sheldon said.
The women’s lacrosse team had an undefeated season en route to the national championship in Scottsdale, Ariz. It requested $6,605 to fund the trip to the tournament.
The team made a point of the fact that the club’s games would be broadcast on live television, something senators said they were excited about.
“I just wanted to say that it’s really cool that the ASUO will be funding something that could be broadcasted live on TV,” Sen. Max Barkley said.
The club cycling team requested $3,850 to attend its national championship in Madison, Wis.
“There’s 180 riders in our event,” cycling club coordinator Will Niemann-Ross said. “There’s pros, because there’s no NCAA rules or anything like that.”
The Senate was very supportive of the request.
“I didn’t even know we had club cycling,” Sen. Sandy Weintraub said. “But it’s a great bike town. Good luck.”
Club Sports Director Sandy Vaughn said club baseball and men’s lacrosse might also come up before the end of the year, and that those might be even larger than the ones that have come up so far. The Senate has also funded trips to national championships this year for women’s water polo and tennis, for a total of about $25,000 spent on club sports so far this year. The Senate has about $60,000 left in its surplus account for the remainder of the year.
