The No. 6 men’s golf team wanted to make a splash in its penultimate tournament of the season, and got off to a solid start in the first round on Monday.
The U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif., was set to begin on Sunday but was delayed by poor weather. The opening round instead took place on Monday, and the Ducks proved mostly unaffected by the delay.
As a team, Oregon shot a 286 (six-over par) in the first round, good for third place overall. Only No. 3 Washington (281) and No. 4 UCLA (283) scored better during the opening round.
Sophomore Daniel Miernicki led the Ducks with a score of 70 (even par), and stood tied for 11th after one round. Fellow sophomore Andrew Vijarro was close behind with a 71(one-over par), while Eugene Wong earned a tie for 21st with a 72 (two-over par). Filling out Oregon’s top four, junior Jack Dukeminier hit a 73 (three-over par) and tied for 30th.
John Chin of UC Irvine shot a 66 (four-under par) in the opening round and claimed the lead.
Second round play took place late Monday afternoon, and the final round takes place today.
