Frequent rain showers in Stanford, Calif. kept the women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals from gaining any solid traction over the weekend.
The Oregon women’s tennis team frequently saw its matches delayed, but still managed some impressive wins on Friday and Saturday.
In doubles play, senior Pavlina Smatova and sophomore Patricia Skowronski advanced to the round of 16 with wins over San Francisco (8-0) and Stanford (8-6). The pair has yet to suffer a loss this fall.
Junior Molly McDevitt and sophomore Julia Metzger scored an 8-4 win over Pacific before falling to UC Davis in the round of 32, while junior Trudie du Toit and freshman Rabea Stueckemann also advanced to the round of 32 before losing.
Smatova also defeated Laura Pola of Fresno State to advance to the round of 32 in singles play, but weather forced her matchup with Lina Xu of Washington to be delayed. Metzger and freshman Lana Buttner won a place in the round of 64, but they would advance no further.
The weather delay between doubles and singles play lasted an astonishing six hours on Friday. The conditions were similar on Saturday, but play was not stopped until the third round of singles matches.
Play will continue today, weather permitting.
