As part of the larger June 14 commencement ceremony, the University’s spring graduation celebration is scheduled to feature speeches from an alumnus and graduating students.
Taking place at Hayward Field, the Graduation Celebration intends to be an opportunity for students to reflect on their experiences and accomplishments during their time at the University.
The celebration will consist of video presentations that will recount campus events from the last few years as well as three student speakers who will address their own personal stories of activism, unique experiences and the legacy they are leaving behind. Graduating students had until last Friday to turn in applications for delivering a speech. The Office of Student Life will select the student speakers shortly.
Aside from the student speakers, 1967 University alumnus Johnpaul Jones will give some remarks at the proceedings.
Jones is a distinguished architect from Seattle and founded the firm Jones & Jones, a noted innovator in design and planning projects. Jones was a lead designer of the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., as well as many Northwest projects such as the Vancouver Land Bridge and the Mercer Slough Nature Park in Bellevue, Wash.
Since graduating from the University, Jones received the University’s Distinguished Service Award in 2005 and visited the University in April to lecture on “Indigenous Design.”
