The Oregon men’s tennis team continued its busy week on Saturday, losing to Cornell 4-2 in Iowa after defeating Utah State on Wednesday 4-0.
The loss ended Oregon’s six-game winning streak and brought its record to 9-3 on the season.
For the seventh straight match, Oregon won the doubles point. But despite a familiar result, doubles play was much closer this time out.
No. 16 Thomas Laurent and Cormac Clissold won their doubles match 6-4, their second win this week, while Simon Stevens and Ty Gentry dropped their match 6-2.
Armando Soemarno and Charles Roberts secured the doubles point for the Ducks by winning three straight games to take the match 7-5.
The Ducks singles lineup was the same as Wednesday’s match against Utah State, but the results were much different.
Cornell and Oregon quickly traded points with Akihiro Tanaka dropping his match against Lev Kazakov 6-1, 6-3 and Laurent winning his match over Alafia Ayeni 6-3, 6-1.
Cornell took the next two points after David Volfson defeated Stevens 6-2 in straight sets and Daniel Grunberger beat Clissold 6-2, 6-3.
This put Cornell one point away from victory and put the result on the shoulders of Gentry and Ethan Young-Smith to extend the match.
Young-Smith dropped the opening set against Joseph McAllister 6-2, but fought back and won the second 6-4.
Gentry won his opening set 7-6 over Jake Hansen, but his match ultimately went unfinished when Young-Smith dropped the decisive third set 6-1, which made Cornell victorious.
The Ducks will look to bounce back tomorrow against No. 42 Iowa at 9 a.m.
