Thanking Those Responsible
President Obama met with the soldiers of Navy SEAL 6 Team, the group that conducted the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound, at Fort Campbell on Friday. He awarded the soldiers the Presidential Unit Citation, the highest honor given to individual military units. While the soldiers clearly deserve untold thanks, President Obama also lauded the broader military for their perseverance. The bravery and skill demonstrated by the Navy SEAL 6’s was tremendous and they deserve special recognition, but it is important to remember the countless other heroes fighting everyday overseas for our protection.@@http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/05/06/bin.laden.obama/index.html@@
Teaching and Learning Center gets news coverage
Even though it was in an article mostly about the Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes, the chronic underfunding and lack of space that faces the Teaching and Learning Center got much-needed attention in Sunday’s Register-Guard. It’s not about who has more; the fact of the matter is that the Teaching and Learning Center is hitting its resource ceiling, and the help they provide students is too essential to let this continue. TLC needs more space, and they needed it yesterday.@@http://www.registerguard.com/web/newslocalnews/26115261-57/center-students-athletes-academic-jaqua.html.csp@@

Democratization Pains
Religious violence has been escalating in Egypt. Muslim and Christian tensions erupted outside a Cairo church when 12 were killed and 232 were wounded. Officials believe the violence stemmed from a Christian woman who had recently converted to Islam, rumored to be held captive in the church. Coptic Christians gathered outside the U.S. embassy, pleading for international protection. As Egypt continues to struggle for a freer form of government, they have to realize that fighting among themselves is the surest way to fail. Religious differences have to be set aside for political freedom.
NY newspaper photoshops Hillary Clinton out of history
Der Tzitung, an Orthodox Jewish newspaper in New York, photoshopped Secretary of State Hillary Clinton out of the White House’s “Situation Room” photograph, taken on the night that news of bin Laden’s death broke. Why? The newspaper apparently has a “no pictures of women” policy, one that apparently extends to high-ranking government officials. The paper has since apologized for altering the historic photograph, but the fact of the matter is that, regardless of intention, the action was sexist and extremely disrespectful to one of the most successful female politicians in U.S. history.@@http://jezebel.com/5799724/hillary-clinton-photoshopped-out-of-situation-room-photo@@
Oregon legislature all worked up over alcohol
During a debate on whether high school culinary arts classes should be able to use alcohol, Oregon legislators again proved that they are easily distracted and have never been teachers (thankfully). Even though professional educators have extolled the educational benefits of letting students use alcohol in their cooking, Salem just can’t get over the idea that there will be alcohol in a high school. Maybe someone should tell them that the ethanol cooks out; but then again, science is not Oregon’s strong suit.
