The Oregon men’s tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday, falling 5-2 to No. 40 Denver.
Denver won four out of the six singles matches and took the doubles point from Oregon (6-1).
Although the 5-2 margin of victory was fairly lopsided, many of the matches were close.
The Ducks’ No. 1 singles player, Alex Rovello, dropped a hard-fought three set match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, to Denver’s Enej Bonin. It was Rovello’s first loss of the season from the No. 1 slot.
Oregon’s No. 2, Baptiste Faynot, suffered his second defeat of the season, a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 decision to Yannick Weihs.
No. 3 singles player Robin Cambier and No. 4 Jose Izquierdo both dropped three set matches for Oregon. Cambier fell to Denver’s Jens Vorkefeld 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, while Izquierdo lost to Andrew Landwerlen 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The Ducks were able to salvage two singles matches, when No. 5 Aaron Clissold topped Jonathan Kidane 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, and No. 6 Duncan MacDonald-Korth defeated Alex Clinkenbeard 6-3, 6-2.
Oregon will return to action on Feb. 12 when they host Seattle University.
