The No. 13 Oregon women’s volleyball team (20-9, 13-8 Pac-12) was stunned against Oregon State (16-15, 8-13 Pac-12) in Corvallis on Tuesday, falling 3-0 at Gill Coliseum. @@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=205338013@@
Just a few days removed from stunning upsets over Stanford and California, the Ducks lost all three sets — 25-18, 25-21, 25-19. The loss also ended Oregon’s three-match winning streak over the Beavers.
“I told our players that they would come out fighting,” Oregon head coach Jim Moore said to GoDucks.com, “and they did. We just never responded to their challenge.”
In the first set, the Beavers jumped out to an early 14-6 lead, and never look back. Oregon climbed back to within four at 22-18, but three straight Oregon State points ended any hope of a comeback and put the Ducks in a 0-1 hole.
Oregon State again got off to a fast start in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead and never relinquishing it. Oregon would close the gap to 14-12, but the Beavers simply refused to back down and earned a narrow 25-21 set win to put the Ducks in yet another 0-2 hole.
They wouldn’t climb out of it this time.
Oregon State hit the ground running in the closing third set, and never trailed again after being tied early at 4-4. There was no magical comeback in the cards for the Ducks, and they left the building with a stunning 3-0 loss.
In the victory, Oregon State outpaced the Ducks in kills (53-36), assists (49-35) and digs (44-32). Oregon had three services aces to the Beavers’ none, but it wasn’t nearly enough to overcome what Moore termed as a lack of focus.
“Defensively, we played very poorly,” Moore said to GoDucks.com. “And what also hurts was our lack of emotion.”
For the Ducks, junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma @@http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=204880765@@led the way with 14 kills, while sophomore setter Lauren Plum had 28 assists and seven digs. Individually, Beaver outside hitter Dre Shaw hit .406 and had 19 kills, while Camille Saxton added 18 kills to go along with a .436 hitting percentage.@@http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/shaw_dre00.html@@ @@http://www.osubeavers.com/sports/w-volley/mtt/saxton_camille00.html@@
